Active Viscoelasticity of Odd Materials

The mechanical response of active media ranging from biological gels to living tissues is governed by a subtle interplay between viscosity and elasticity. We generalize the canonical Kelvin-Voigt Maxwell models viscoelastic that break both parity time-reversal symmetries. resulting continuum theories exhibit viscous elastic tensors are antisymmetric, or odd, under exchange pairs indices. analyze how these violating coefficients determine relaxation mechanisms wave-propagation properties odd materials.Received 18 March 2020Revised 17 February 2021Accepted 19 2021DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.126.138001Published American Physical Society terms Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.
